At the completion of the 1962 football season, Al Waters, one of West's outstanding ends, was given one of the finest honors a high school athlete can receive. Al was selected for the all‑state football squad. He was selected by five different daily newspapers as a first‑string end. Waters is the first athlete from Maine West ever to gain an all-state rating.
On December 1, Al attended the all‑state football banquet at the Urbana‑Lincoln Hotel on the University of Illinois campus with head football coach Mr. Ken Olson. Aside from being selected to the all‑state squad, Al was voted to the all‑conference team and picked the most valuable player on the Warrior team by his teammates.
During the eight‑game football season Al caught 40 passes totaling 607 yards, averaged eight tackles per game, and scored seven touchdowns.
At the present time Al is participating on the basketball squad and is leading the Warrior bucketmen in scoring with a 19.8 point average. Last season Al averaged 15 rebounds and 17.6 points per game. At the close of the season he was named to the all‑conference team and voted the most valuable player by his teammates.
During the baseball season Al played first base, hit .406, and was selected to the all‑conference team.

Up to the start of the basketball season, Al, who stands 6 feet 3 inches and weighs 196, has earned five varsity letters. Al's favorite pastimes include watching television and reading. His favorite subject is history and the foods which rate on the top of his list are steak and pizza.
Al's greatest thrills include the all‑state selection in football, catching the game‑winning pass from Rick DeKreek in a game against Glenbrook, and traveling with the varsity team to the Pontiac Christmas tournament while only a sophomore.
"Mud," as he is sometimes called by his teammates, is very much looking forward to the coming Christmas tournament to be held at Proviso West.
At the completion of high school, Al plans to enroll at either the University of Wisconsin or the University of Michigan.
When asked to comment on this year's basketball team, Al related, "This year's basketball squad has a lot of potential and with a little luck has a good chance to go down‑state."
