MW Debaters Host
N. Surburban Debaters

Maine West's debators will host over 200 students from north suburban high schools all day Saturday for rounds of debating. According to Mr. Eric Edstrom, Co-debate coach, this day is a highlight for speech activities and debate at Maine West.

The debate invitational includes members of the Suburban Interstate Debate league. West, along with 12 other schools, belongs to the Interscholastic Debate league composed of Evanston, New Trier, Highland Park, Deerfield, Mary D. Bradford (Kenosha, Wisconsin), Waukegan, North Chicago, Morton East and West, Prospect, Forest View, and York.

"Resolved: That the United States should promote a common market for the Western Hemisphere" is the issue to be debated in the second of three league meets. The forensic contests are debated on the varsity level and, if extended, can include the sub‑varsity divisions. The varsity level uses the cross examination technique used for the training of lawyers and requires a great deal of skill.

Coaches are selected from schools other than those which are in the league as judges.

Teams Rate High

"The SIDL has team standings and maintains a cheerful, friendly but fierce competition between the member teams," pointed out Mr. Edstrom. Last year's champ was Evanston followed by New Trier and Highland Park. Included in these victories were nine teams who participated in WBBM‑TV'S "Rebuttal." Two of these teams, Evanston, Mary D. Bradford high schools, place first and second, respectively. Further honors came to the league when an Evanston‑Aurora team took second place in the nation.

Competing for Maine West in the varsity division will be Mary Gembicki '64, and Jackie Piraino '64, affirmative; Bob Reinhart '65, Phil Engle '65, Dick Leyerle '65, and Tim Zijewski '64, negative. Two sub-varsity teams will compete in a beginners' tournament held in conjunction with the SIDL meet tomorrow.

"Maine West students are invited to attend any or all of these debates," urged Miss Harriet Johnson, co‑coach. Members of the Student Council will act as hosts and hostesses and timekeepers.
