Pledge Is Symbol of Respect

Homerooms at our school which are observing the pledging of allegiance to the flag are to be commended we think. Also the Student Council deserves credit for backing this project.

Some rooms are giving the pledge of allegiance every day and others on a once‑a‑week basis. We have found that where it is being given it is being done with sincerity. To be effective the pledge certainly must be done sincerely. Homerooms doing this have decided themselves that they should. When the Student Council suggested that homeroom representatives bring this up in their respective homerooms, the final decision was to rest with the students and teacher.

The pledge should remind us of our forefathers' sacrifices for liberty. George Washington had a definite purpose in mind when he asked Betsy Ross to make a flag representing the ideals of the United States. He wanted all Americans to recognize the importance of liberty and union.

One way we can show our loyalty for our country is to observe the pledge and follow its meaning. It shows we are thankful that we live in a nation where we can lead free and happy lives. We should realize that life is not so good all over the world. We should be glad to have a country and a flag we can be proud of and respect.
