Mainites Express Opinions About
Exchange Student

Mainites expressed the following opinions when asked if they approved of maintaining a foreign exchange student program at Maine West.

Judie Curran '66
"The training and education of a foreign exchange student is worthwhile because the students return to their countries as future leaders who will have an understanding of the United States."

Neshan Keshian '64
"I think the presence of an exchange student will foster better school spirit and help to unify the student body."

Zella Torchia '63
"Our funds could be better used by aiding projects in our tremendous amount of good will nor can he exert such great influence."

Mary Ann Gembicki '64
"I am in favor of having a foreign exchange student; however, considering the results of students voting on the issue last year, our student body may not entirely favor the idea. I wonder how the kids will treat the exchange student."

Kathy Ditton '63
"I have seen the repeated successes of other interim conference schools in maintaining a foreign exchange student program. We will be able to experience personal contact with a foreign student and the problems of his people."

John Bleharski '65
"The foreign exchange student will give us his ideas concerning the way he and other people in his country feel toward us. We have a responsibility of creating a good impression of American teens for our foreign student. Also, we must explain to him the problems and dilemmas of American students as well as the finer points of our school."

Diane Weldon '65
"Having an exchange student is worthwhile and beneficial, but I think our student body is neither prepared nor unprejudiced enough to accept the student on a friendly, sociable level."

Cheri Anderson '65
"I really think the idea is great! Unfortunately, a great number of students will be unable to benefit from having an exchange student because they are either uninterested in the idea, or they won't associate with the person."
