"We know that we should win every basketball game, because you have to give your greatest effort for the school," asserts Barney "Hawk" Franzen, Warrior of the West.
Barney who has played basketball four years and lettered twice prefers it to other sports because "It's a great game to both watch and play." This 6 foot, 2 inch bucket man has also participated in track for three years and has earned a letter in cross country after gaining two years of experience in that sport.
Barney never discusses basketball without acclaiming the importance of the team and of cooperation by the team members on the court. He considers winning the game, not personal satisfaction, as the main objective of the team and every member on it. "Playing and winning is nothing personal for me, everything is team effort," explains Barney. He also maintains that athletes should remain friends off the court as "Your attitude toward guys on the team can really affect your playing."
How does Barney react to the fast action, tension, and crucial execution of plays on the court? He tries to relax as much as possible, especially during free throws, and to concentrate on playing a successful game.

"The most important thing is going into every contest believing that we are going to come out ahead," discloses Barney.
Barney's most memorable game was played last year when the Warriors downed Morton West by two points and became the only conference team to defeat Morton during the entire season. "One of the best moments of this season was defeating Prospect," recalls Barney, who was the highest scorer in that game with 16 points.
Barney divides his spare time between playing cards, eating club sandwiches and scrambled eggs, and a well‑known blonde, peppermint addict. He has also been known to evade sneaky Bill Dautel and the latter's after‑dark camera.
After graduation, Barney plans to pursue his interest in mathematics by majoring in business and accounting at either Iowa State or Cornell University.
