Hoopsters Eye 13th, 14th Wins

Tonight Maine West's varsity bucket squad will travel to Wheaton in search of their ninth conference win of the year. Tomorrow night the Warriors will host Homewood‑Flossmoor in an attempt to gain their fourteenth seasonal win.

Against Glenbrook, the Westmen hustled their way to a hard fought, 76‑68 decision. High men for West were Al Waters with 30, Rick DeKreek with 13, and Dave Aegerter with 12.

The Warriors won the tip, and the ball went to Franzen who hit with a jump shot. However, Harris came right back for Glenbrook, as he hit with a push shot, tieing the score at 2‑2. Play remained the same tempo the first half as both teams played a wide open game. Glenbrook's fouls began to pile up, but nevertheless they were never down by more than a basket. Play reached a climax when Al Waters sunk a shot making the half time score 34‑32.

The second half was controlled by the Warriors as they scored 42 points to the Spartan's 36. West lost the lead momentarily but quickly recaptured it when they began hitting at the foul lines. Aegerter sank a shot, making it 40‑35. From this point on, Glenbrook was never in it.

West received credit for 22 of their points at the free throw line partly to the credit of a few Glenbrook players who used the limit of their fouls.

Against Niles West the Warriors picked up their seventh interim win in a come‑from‑behind effort. Waters paced the Westmen with 23 points, followed by Wehlacz who totaled 16.

Wehlacz, starting in place of injured Dave Aegerter, won the tip as he tapped the ball to Dekreek who set up a lay‑up for the first points. Niles came right back with two quick buckets to start a see‑saw battle that lasted the entire first quarter. Neither team could manage more than a two point lead.

In the second quarter Waters gave the Westmen their first big margin by making a rebound and two free throws for a 23‑17 lead. Niles came right back, however, as Zastrow began hitting and Niles started to pull away, taking a commanding 37‑31 half‑time lead.

The third quarter started out as both teams traded baskets. Zastrow put one in giving Niles a nine point lead. This marked the beginning of the best defensive effort of the year for the Warriors. Niles didn't score a point for the rest of the period as the Warriors took a 48‑45 lead.

In the fourth quarter the drought was finally broken for the Indians after almost six and one half pointless minutes as an outside shot made the score 51‑47. Time was running out, however, as the Warriors led by Waters and Wehlacz, kept the lead to clinch the win for the Westmen.
