Mermen Get 4th In Conference

Maine West's varsity swimmers won one while dropping two in dual competition these past three weeks, besides placing fourth in the Interim conference swim meet held at Niles West.

Juniors John Gunderson and Jimo Kuhrt each took third in the conference meet, in the 100‑yard backstroke and 100‑yard breaststroke, respectively. The Warriors also fared well in the relays; the 100‑yard freestyle and 100‑yard medley, as they took third in each of these events. Senior Art Behn managed a fifth in the individual medley while Bill Schacht placed fifth in the 100 and 400‑yard freestyle events. Bill Eley took the only remaining individual honor for West with a sixth in the 50‑yard freestyle.

In the meet against Riverside ‑ Brookfield, the mermen lost by 10 points, 52 1/2 – 42 1/2. The Warriors took three firsts as Art Behn, John Gunderson, and Jimo Kuhrt finished in the top spot in the 200‑yard individual medley; 100‑yard backstroke; and 100‑yard breaststroke. The 200‑yard medley relay team of Eley, Gast, Kerber, and Kuhrt tied.

In the meet against Deerfield John Gundeson was the only Warrior to take a first, by winning the 100‑yard backstroke. Final score of the meet was 62‑33.

It was a different story in the Morton West meet, when the Warriors downed their opponents by a near perfect score of 82‑13. All the firsts and seconds were captured by the mermen as Bill Schacht set a new record for the 200‑yard freestyle event with a time of 2:06.2.
