Key Club Initiated at MW;
16 Boys Are Now Members

The newest club at Maine West is the Key club. Several clubs of this nature are in the neighborhood, the nearest being at Maine East.

Key clubs are service organizations at the high school level under the supervision of a faculty sponsor and the authority of a nearby Kiwanis club. The first key club was established more than 45 years ago; they are now located throughout this country and Canada.

The club at Maine East runs the paperback book store, similar to the Student Council PATH here at West, provides other services to the school.

Mr. Raymond Ross, in the business education department, is the faculty sponsor of West's club. John Heckel '64, president; Mike Robbins '64, vice-president; and Steve Ross '64, secretary‑treasurer are the officers chosen several weeks ago.

The club has no definite plans for the future and would appreciate any suggestions, which should be delivered to a member of the club or Mr. Ross.

Key clubs are limited in their membership in that only sophomore, junior, and senior boys are allowed to join. Any boy who is interested in developing his leadership abilities is free to join the club, providing he is not a member of the Student Council.

Members of the Kiwanis club all over the nation help in the organization of Key clubs. The Kiwanis member at West is principal Mr. Herman L. Rider. Mr. Rider was instrumental in the organization of the Key club at West.

"The Key club can be another avenue Maine West students may follow to learn the rule of brotherhood which is achieved by helping and serving other people." Mr. Rider further observed, "It is my hope that the Student Council, Brotherhood society, Key club, and other clubs will strive to make brotherhood an everyday goal."

President John Heckel advised interested boys, "The club is new and can use all the help, cooperation, and new members available to make it a worthwhile venture and as successful as its predecessors at other schools."
