At the recent Chicago land Stage Band festival, the Maine West Show band won the first place, superior‑rating trophy. The competition was open to all high schools within a 100‑mile radius of Chicago.

The 24‑piece band under the direction of Mr. Jared Spears was complimented by the judges on its "stage‑band concept" and on the precision of its performance. This was the first time that Maine West entered the competition.

The members of the band are Tom Dickert '63, Don Grundler '64, Chuck Hawes '63, Dave Nesbit '63, Scott Weidner, '64, and Dennis Young '66 playing the saxophones; Tom Balma '64, Jim Clouse '66, Don Deese '64, Rick Honn '64, Wayne Markworth '64, trumpets; Mark Bade '63, Jeff Lassau '65, Bob Schapper '64, Ron Van Scoyac '65, trombones; Bob Cizek '65, Val Olson '63, Jan Rausey '64, play the French horns; Randy Deckwerth '63, Phil Hway '64, Pat Martin '64, Roger Pease '63, Dave Thinnes '65, rhythm; and Ingrid Gustus '63, assists on the jazz flute.
