VOL. V, NO. 1
Maine West Concert Band
Wins State Championship
At 7 a.m. Saturday morning, August 13, a boisterous, noisy crowd boarded two buses and headed downstate to the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield. It was the Maine West Concert Band, going downstate to vie for the Governor's trophy.
Reaching their destination at 11:30, the band members speedily besieged the various food stands, then proceeded to tune up and ready themselves for the concert. The program for the afternoon included the marches: "Band of Bands" by Mesang, and "The Liberty Bell" by John Philip Sousa. To the delight of all, the Band also played "The Bossa Nova" by Walters and "On Stage with Cole Porter." For their more serious numbers the band chose, "The Ballet Music" from Prince Igor, "Slavonic Dances," and "Trumpet Voluntary."
"Our victory," Mr. Robert Kuite, director, said, "is due only to the dynamic participation of the students who took their time and energy to take part in our summer band program." He went on to say that this summer was one of the most active in the history of the band. They took part in the Swedish Day Picnic, the Tournament of Music at Riverview in which they received a superior rating, the Fair, an all‑day picnic at Cedar Lake, and three Des Plaines Park District concerts.
