Student Council Keeps
Diane, Barry Busy
"People who talk about Council without trying to do anything about it" is the pet peeve of Diane Clarke, secretary of the Student Council. Diane is a brown‑eyed blonde who is about 5 feet 3 inches tall.

Born in Peru, Indiana, on January 22, 1945, Diane attended North School, Thacker Jr. High, and Maine West. Diane, in her junior year at Maine, was a V‑Show director, Social Committee Chairman for Student Council and a Junior Leader. In her sophomore year, Diane was on Girls' Club Council. She was also in Stage Crafters and helped apply make‑up for the V‑Show and Senior Class play.

Swimming, water skiing, sewing, and playing piano are among Diane's favorite pastimes, but she says Council takes up most of her time. Her favorite subject is chemistry. After graduating from Maine West, Diane plans to go to Vanderbelt College to study nursing.

When asked what she thought could improve Maine West, Diane said the students could be more active in the clubs and organizations and have more school spirit. She said better communications could improve Student Council. If Diane could change one thing about herself it would be her uncoordination. She said she is always "tripping up and down stairs."

Diane was elected to go to Girls' State. When asked what she got out of the trip, Diane replied, "I've learned the importance and value of government in our daily lives."

Diane's outstanding memory of Maine West was being elected secretary of Student Council. She said she liked her junior year in high school best because "I just seemed to enjoy it more." In Diane's opinion, the most valuable thing she has learned in high school is to keep busy and active.
His wry humor, slow smile, and subtle mind are trademarks of Barry Eisfeldt, president of Student Council. "Getting the facts" proved difficult, because when Barry is asked to talk about himself, he is modest to the point of being shy.

A quite embarrassing situation in Barry's life was the time he and a friend, Bruce Hubbel, decided to climb a steep cliff near Lake Michigan. Just as Barry's hand became visible from the top of the cliff, he was shocked to hear a girl's scream.

This personality sketch is in perfect agreement with Ralph Waldo Emerson's philosophy, "Insist on yourself‑never imitate." Barry points out, "A person should be himself at all times. A sincere person is just himself." Sincerity rates high with the 5 feet 11 inch senior. Equally important to him are honesty and responsibility.

Free time is virtually non‑existent to Barry. At school after classes, he devotes most of his time to Student Council. In addition this brown‑haired, hazel-eyed, busy student works for the Jewel Tea Company as a clerk. At home Barry is equally busy answering the phone that "never seems to stop ringing." Many people call for advice about Council matters. When he does manage to find free time, he is usually found tinkering with engines.

Considering this schedule, it was curiosity that prompted the question, "What sort of diet keeps you going?" His reply was "I never eat breakfast, seldom eat lunch, and just grab a glass of root beer for dinner!"
