VOL. V, NO. 1

THE MAINE POINT
If you were one of over 1,200 students who have had their schedules changed, as I did, I'm sure you share my feeling of gratitude to the office personnel. Even though they were virtually mobbed by a hoard of confused Mainites, they still managed a smile and a good deal of effort.

A good part of the problem is the freshman class - all 1,200 of them. But I hear the problem is being solved, in a limited manner anyway, two freshmen are being adopted by a pair of Korean parents.

The new students also create quite a problem in the cafeteria. Some are just not getting enough to eat. In fact, 10 juniors and a sophomore received CARE packages from Europe! Seriously, the cooks are doing a fine job, and we can show our appreciation by stacking our dishes neatly at the disposal counter.
Singing unsung heroes Department: A teacher who does much work with little recognition is The Westerner's own advisor, Mr. Gerald Royer. Often he stays late hours helping on the paper, making it presentable to the student body. This is extra‑curricular for him, he also has English classes he has to prepare for. Under his guidance the paper has never missed a deadline.

If you know any unsung heroes (not necessarily a teacher) write a short paragraph on him or her and turn it in to room A‑111.

Item: this is National Dog week; National Dog week slogan reads: "Befriend a dog this week." Catchy, eh?

The Letters to the Editor column has been discontinued. Why? Namely because we received few letters, and the letters we did receive were unworthy of the space. So last year the journalism class wrote ALL the letters.
