Harriers Earn Split
With Decision Over Barrington
In its '63 debut, the Maine West Warrior cross country team was defeated by Niles East 25-30 on Tuesday, September 10. The meet was held on the Maine West athletic field, with a good crowd of supporters on hand. Snapping back the varsity downed Barrington 24-34 Tuesday. The harriers will seek better fortune at their next outing when they play host to Niles West on Thursday, September 26. All home meets start at 4:30 p.m.

The first 10 finishers for the thinclads were John Greco 1st, 10:56; Don Kinder 4th, 11:17; Tom Johnstone 7th, 11:27; Jim Armbruster 8th, 11:28; Lloyd Schlegel 10th, 11:35; Jim Richards 12th, 11:36; Bob Biggs 14th, 11:39; Bob Gundelach 16th, 11:41; Rich Bokor 17th, 11:57; and Doug Hans 18th, 11:57.
As in golf, the object of a cross country meet is to try to get the lowest possible score. The first place runner is awarded one point for his team, and the second place finisher is awarded two points for his team and so on until the first five runners from each team have finished. Then the points are added up, and the team with the lowest number wins the meet.
