Intramurals Attract Many
Intramurals comes from the Greek meaning, "within the walls." Here at Maine West it involves athletic competition between boys within our school. Last year, 87 per cent of the boys at Maine West participated in at least one of the many intramural sports that were offered.

At the present time, intramural tennis and golf tournaments are under way. Touch football will begin September 24. Badminton and cross country competition will be held during October. There are free swims planned once a week also.

You're probably wondering how you could participate? Here are the requirements. You cannot be a member of an interscholastic team, or have won a varsity letter in the sport.
To participate, watch The Westerner and the daily bulletin for various tournaments and then report according to instructions. Teams for the sports are organized in the various physical education classes. Competition is always on a class basis. Each boy who wins a class championship in an individual sport receives a Maine West intramural felt emblem. Team members of a class championship win a similar award.

A point system was installed by Mr. Miley Hotchkiss, chairman of the intramural program. These points add up and the two boys with the highest total in each class at the end of the school year win trophies. The trophies and felt emblems are on display in the trophy case in the east foyer of the swimming pool.
