Maine Faces Leyden in Opener
The Warriors open their Mid-Suburban Conference season tomorrow against West Leyden in an away game.

The Maine West football Warriors opened the '63 season on a sour note by dropping their opening game with Peoria Central 7-6, Friday, September 13.

Although the Warriors seemed to out‑class the Lions in size and speed, they seemed to lack the timing and aggressiveness to put these qualities to the best advantage.

The Warriors only score came after a threat by Central in the second quarter. Stopping a Lion drive on their own two‑yard line, the gridmen proceeded to open a gaping hole in the Peoria defense for Jim Chichowski who raced through the Peoria secondary, and outran the rest of the defense for a 92‑yard tally. The extra point was missed.
The Lions threatened once more in the half, but the Warrior's stout defense again held the goal line uncrossed. At the half the score stood Maine West 6, Peoria Central 0.

After listening to a spirited half‑time talk, the Warriors kicked off to the Lions. They took the ball on their own 40, but after reeling off a first down, they were thrown for losses of 4 and 9 yards and were forced to punt. After regaining the ball and not being able to move it, they once more exchanged punts. As the quarter ended it was Peoria's ball, first and 10 on their own 36.

Peoria's score came with 7:46 left in the fourth quarter. With third down and two yards to go on their own 46, they sent their 220‑pound fullback off tackle hoping to get the first down. What they thought to be short yardage turned into a 54‑yard touchdown jaunt. They took the lead, on a highly disputed extra point, 7‑6.

Although the game must be chalked up in the loss column, good performances were turned in by Dave Aegerter, Cal Lewis, and Dave Gnoske.
