Maine West's bucketmen beat Glenbrook North, 60-56 in the first game of the Regional basketball tourney. High scorers for the Warriors were Jim Smith with 18 points, Joe Wehlacz with 13, and Gabbert with 8.
Maine West put two representatives on the all‑conference team this year. They were Jim Smith and Joe Wehlacz. John Gabbert was given honorable mention. "Big Joe" was also nominated by the Conference for All‑State honors. With a 34‑point scoring spree against Deerfield, Wehlacz nailed down the Mid‑Suburban League scoring title with a total of 178 points. Ron Holder of Prospect, nosed out Jim Smith by one point to take second place with 161 points.
The cagers finished out their Conference season with a perfect 10-0 record by walloping Deerfield, 70-46. In that game, Wehlacz put in 34 points to lead the Warriors of West. Smith had 14, Gabbert 12, and Gundling 6. Although the game was hard fought through out the first half, West pulled away in the third quarter and held a comfortable lead through the remainder of the game.
One week earlier, Maine met Morton West and beat them 62‑41.
