West's Diamondmen Return
"High school baseball is 90 per cent pitching," according to Coach Al Carstens, who, along with Coach Gaston Freeman, will lead the Warriors in their defense of the State title. In the Warrior's camp, pitching is the big question. Where will Maine find the answer to that question? Hopefully, in the arms of Seniors Les Jannusch, Dick Lunsford, Ron Fritz, or Jim Rybarczyk.

Coach Carstens related that since last year's championship team was predominately a senior one, leaving only returning lettermen, Dave Agerter and John Gabbert, this would definitely be a rebuilding year with every position open, leaving a good chance for new talent to earn a spot.

Maine West shared the Conference championship last year with Morton West, to make it three championships in as many years for the diamondmen. Coach Carstens can sport a better record than that. He hasn't coached a loser in six seasons.
In three years that he spent at Maine East, he led the Blue Demons to three West Suburban League pennants in a row.

When asked about the other teams around the Mid‑Suburban League, Coach Carstens replied, "Deerfield and Glenbrook North both had enough underclassmen pitchers on their varsity squads who should prove to be very tough. Forest View has good pitching, and you can never write Prospect off any list. The Conference race will be a real tight one for sure."

Finally, Mr. Carstens said, "That along with pitching, experience is going to be needed, and a good test should be our first four games." The Warriors meet Oak Park, Evanston, Morton West, and Niles West on April 4th, 6th, 7th, and 9th. The first three games are at home.
