West Ranks High at Art Exhibit
The curtain went up February 14th, on the Wieboldt's Scholastic Art Exhibition, sponsored by Scholastics Magazine, at the Randhurst store.
Maine West competed with 27 schools in the Mt. Prospect area. Prizes vied for were five regional Hallmark Awards which will later contend for $100 prizes, Blue Ribbons of which winning entries will be sent to New York, Gold Keys, and Honorable Mentions. Of these awards, Maine West students receive 50 Gold Key Awards, 23 Blue Ribbons, 119 Honorable Mention, and two Hallmarks.
Jean Alajoki '64, set the pace for the school by winning two Hallmark Awards along with several Blue Ribbons, Gold Keys, and Honorable Mentions.
Many of these students received more than one award in each category. Seniors winning Gold Keys and Blue Ribbons were Connie Andresen, Jens Brash, Ardes Buckley, Bob Cain, Fred Carlson, Sue Dombrowski, Neshan Keshian, Donna Lindboe, Dick Pate, Deborah Pracht, Todd Riddell, Alice Utter, and Chuck Wente; junior Gail Horn; sophomore Cheri Mercer; and freshmen Lorrie Dandurand.
Gold Keys, only, went to seniors Mikki Riddiough, Susan Schuster, John Tueweit, and Laurel Williams; juniors Kay Dunavant, Sheila Dunn, and Allyn Schuldt; sophomores Peggy Fisher and Beth Radcliffe; and freshmen Marcia Gibbons, Laura Joseph, Sue Maynard, and Peg Ratliffe.
Honorable Mentions
Honorable Mentions were received by seniors Rich Bayster, Leah Forcell, Judy Fredericks, Wendy Ganschow, Rich Honn, Ursula Krome, Steve Olson, Scott Perry, Ruth Salzman, and Steve Voyles.
Juniors receiving Honorable Mentions were Sandra Andrew, Eileen Halek, Jane Hasse, Lorne Held, Jeanne Heller, Jack Hoehn, Gloria Hurst, John Kennett, Pat LaSalle, Kathy McCarthy, Karl Raack, Alyson Weathers, and Jane Wolski.
Also, sophomores Randy Black, Mick Brennan, Carol Buttner, Bob Chamberlain, Rich Mellen, Kathy Rice, and Tim Updyke. Freshmen winners were George Bethurem, Kris Dernehl, Dave DiSylvestro, Jan Grubert, Gary Grooman, Ken Hopkins, Gregg Possehl, Barbara Prykan, Laura Pudelwitts, Sarah Randahl, and Julie Van Tellingen.
Those responsible for the production of this outstanding work were Maine's art teachers, Mr. George Blanas, chairman; Mr. I Jack McCarthy, Mr. Earl Meitzner, and Mrs. Bonita Stone.
