Assembly Conduct Attacked
To the Editor:
I'm writing this letter to the students of Maine West hoping to make some impression on the students of the school. I've always been proud of being a member of the Junior Class, up till March 12th, that is. I had a ringside seat to a really disgusting display of poor sportsmanship.
"We're juniors, and we're the best." That was what we used to cry all the time. "Yaaa class of '65!" That's all I can say for you. You made the pre-election assembly a mockery and ruined something that was a lot of work, something that was important to the whole school, as well as to those running for office. Being upperclassmen, our class should be setting an example to the freshmen; instead they're setting an example for us.
Maybe there should be no more assemblies. You, the students would protest‑you couldn't get out of advanced algebra, or swimming, or whatever you have at that time. When you do go to an assembly, what do you do? You act like you're straight out of kindergarten.
There are those of you who criticize Student Council but won't do anything to get your opinions voiced. Maybe disturbing an assembly is just a way for you to show off, "I'm a big, brave man. I can get up, in front of 800 kids and make a lot of noise, as well as make a fool of myself and my class." Good for you!
I'm writing about what I saw. It was nearly as bad at the other assemblies. This school has quite a bit of growing up to do, that's for sure. We're big kids now. We're in high school, one of the best, I may add. Why, then, did we let this happen? It's never happened before. Let's make sure it never happens here again.
