'Be Yourself,' Advises Angie
By Tim Keane & Jim Leis
Angie Dickinson, one of Hollywood's brightest new stars, is truly alive. This 5‑foot, 5‑inch, brown‑eyed blonde conveys that feeling wherever she is. As you' look at her you see in her girlish smile a warmth which makes you want to smile.
Miss Dickinson's beginning in pictures is a storybook tale. As a Hollywood secretary, she entered and won a beauty contest. She was immediately spotted by the casting director of the Jimmy Durante show and offered a small part. After this first taste of "showbiz," Angie enrolled in Batami Schneider's acting workshop. Her first motion picture Lucky Me was the first in a number of minor roles in films like Rio Bravo with John Wayne, Bramble Bush with Richard Burton, Rachel Cade and Jessica. Ocean's Eleven and Rome Adventure gave way to her first major role in Captain Newman which has been nominated for three Academy awards.
When polled about such things as her opinion of the Beatles, Angie disclosed these thoughts, "I think the Beatles are funny and have a good sense of humor." She feels that acting is a hard business to get into and that there is a great need for, good writers. As for advice to a future as an entertainer, she said, "He or she should not expect too much."
One of her greatest attributes is her non‑conformity. According to Angie, one of the most important qualities needed by an actress is a desire to be one's self. "If an actress copies some other actress then she is no longer herself, but someone else," she asserted.
As for current plans, she is under contract to Universal Pictures but has no new assignment in the movie field. She does hope to lift her voice in song before the end of the year, though. She wants, above all, to play a robust comedy role so she can let herself go.
