2 New Teachers Are Travelers
"There is a high quality of education at Maine West, and the faculty is wonderful to work with," commented Mrs. Ruth Volz, one of the new home economics teachers at Maine West this year.

Mrs. Volz has brown hair, blue eyes, and is a petite 5 feet 2 inches tall. In the past she enjoyed hiking and camping but now classifies her hobby as sewing. She has visited the northeastern part of the country and would like to travel further in the future.

In high school, Mrs. Volz became interested in teaching because of the interest her teachers had shown in her. She recommends the University of Illinois for any girls wishing to major in home economics.

Previously Mrs. Volz was a student teacher at Oneida High School in Illinois, and before coming to Maine West, she taught for seven years at Palatine High. This year Mrs. Volz teaches family living and Foods I. She has majored in home economics at Illinois State Normal and University of Illinois. This summer she plans to attend the University of Wisconsin to take further home economics courses.
One of Maine West's new mathematics teachers, Mr. Dean Hinshaw, tells the press about himself. He was born in Chicago but spent most of his life in Beloit, Wisconsin. Mr. Hinshaw and his wife Martha have four children ranging in age from 9‑21.

Mr. Hinshaw, who has been teaching for 16 years, has a M. Ed. from the University of Michigan and a M.S. from Purdue. He started his advanced education at Beloit College. Mr. Hinshaw taught in upper Michigan and in Rockford, Illinois just before coming here.

His favorite activities are camping, swimming, hiking, and amateur cooking. He also enjoys reading and working math problems. When asked about his favorite foods, he replied, "I like all foods, but cooking and eating different variations of home‑made pancakes is what I like the most." He dislikes a student who asks a question, then will not listen to the answer of the question.

He enjoys travel but doesn't enjoy the process of getting there. During World War II, while serving in the Army Air Force from 1940-1946, he was in Hawaii, Saipan, and Okinawa. Mr. Hinshaw has been in most of the United States but likes the Middle West best.
