Gymnastics Team Sends 5 To State
The varsity gymnastics team completed its 1963-64 season last Friday evening, with five of the musclemen placing in the State preliminaries.
On Saturday, March 7th, the varsity gymnasts took part in the Arlington District meet, with the Warriors coming in seventh place out of 15 schools. The host school won the meet.
5 Warriors Qualify
In the District meet, in order to go to the State preliminaries, a contestant must place in the top 10 positions. Five Warriors did this. Tom Roessing led the Warriors, tying for second place on the side horse, with Bill Bach tying for sixth place. Terry Bishop came in fifth on the high bars, and John Kennett ended in sixth place on the parallel bars. The fifth Warrior to place was Fred Bach who came in eighth in the tumbling event.
Last Friday, the Westmen traveled to Willowbrook high school for the State preliminaries. Bad luck befell the musclemen in the opening session, when no Mainites were able to place in the top 10.
Roessing Misses
Roessing, picked as a contender for the State crown on the side horse, started off in bad form and did not place. Bill Bach placed twelfth, only two points behind the 10th place finisher. Fred Bach missed in tumbling, coming in fourteenth.
The second session also saw the Warriors meet with bad luck. Bishop, one of the boys rated in the top 10 on high bar, started his routine and fell off the bar on a flank vault. Kennett, then went up on parallel bars, and placed twelfth, only two points out of the 10th place position.
