Joe Selected For All‑State Cage Honors
Joe Wehlacz, Maine West's 6‑foot 9‑inch center, has been to the Chicago American's All-State team. As scoring champion in the Mid‑Suburban League with 178 points, Joe was also a good rebounder.

Maine West Warriors dropped out of the State Basketball Tourney by losing to New Trier's Tigers 52-50. After a poorly played half, where they displayed little in the way of shooting, Maine pulled away to a 5-point lead at the end of the third quarter.
New Trier Presses

At the start of the fourth quarter, New Trier went into a full court press. The Warriors broke under the pressure. With only minutes left, New Trier tied the score. In the ensuing minutes, the lead wavered back and forth until the final 30 seconds when Maine controlled the ball and the score read 50‑all.

Holding the ball for one shot, Maine's Gabbert tried to feed Wehlacz under the basket, only to have the ball stolen. The Tigers Major broke with Berlin and Riddel toward the Warrior basket. Major's pass to Berlin and Berlin's short shot put the game on ice for the Tigers as the gun sounded.
