Warrior Thinclads Enter
Stiff Evanston Invitationals
The West varsity track team downed Proviso West on Thursday, March 6th, by a 53-37 score and trounced Elgin 84-16 on Thursday, March 12th. Both meets were held in Maine East's fieldhouse.
Neuman Wins Broad Jump
The thinclads started out on the right foot as Paul Neuman won the broad jump. Bob Tatge and Bruce Congalton then placed first and second, respectively, in the high hurdles. Jerry Nebel won the 50‑yard dash for Maine with Neuman finishing third. Bob Biggs and Lloyd Schiegel raced to first and second finishes in the half mile, and the 4‑lap relay team of Bernie Braun, Dick Kobylski, Nebel, and Tatge raced past the Maroons to a new school record of 1:16.4.
Meanwhile, the high jumpers, shot putters, and pole vaulters were collecting all the points in their respective events. Neuman, Phil Engle, and Jim Burson captured the first three spots for Maine in the high jump.
Pole vaulters Phil Dindinger, Phil Boyce, and Jim Bullerman, finished first, second, and third, respectively. Dale Luzinski won the shot put, with Bill Rosenbergh and Tom Smith coming in second and third.
Wayne Wysoglad and Earl White ended up second and third in the low hurdles, and Chip Krainik and Pete Schafft placed first and second in the 440‑yard dash. Russ Suszko and Tom Johnstone finished first and second for West in the mile run.
8‑Lap Relay First
The meet ended when the 8‑lap relay team of Braun, Krainik, John Tarbert, and Wysoglad beat Elgin for top billing.
The Elgin meet ended the indoor dual season for the ovalmen. The season record for the thinclads was 5-2. The next meet is tonight when the Westmen enter the huge Evanston Invitational held at Evanston.
