Debaters Win TV's Rebuttal
Maine West debaters, Mary Ann Gembecki '64, and Tim Zijewski '64, won with the affirmative side against Thornton Fractional South on a television broadcast, Rebuttal, March 28th. In this debate, the varsity squad defended the statement, Resolved: That Congress should enact a new presidential succession law.
This is the second victory for the debate squad and has made the Maine West team one of eight finalists on Rebuttal.
Members of the squad will again be on television, May 23rd, against Oliver P. Morton High School. The subject will be, Resolved: That the federal government should guarantee an opportunity for higher education to all qualified high school graduates. Phil Engle '65, and Robert Reinhart '65, the third squad of the varsity team, Will take the negative side of the question.
If Maine again takes a victory, the fourth quad, Randy Dean '65, and Steve Karina '65, will debate.
"It is a possibility that Maine West will participate in the championship round, June 20th, if the other two teams win," remarked Mr. Eric Edstrom, sponsor.
Because of these victories, the Maine West debate squad is eligible for the television debates next year. The debate team has never won a championship on the Rebuttal television program as of this moment.
