State Champs Unbeaten in
Opening Three Ball Games
In Tuesday's Leyden game, the diamondmen exploded for three runs in the first inning and held that lead for the first four innings. Then the roof collapsed. Les Jannusch, pitcher, walked four in a row and was replaced by Dick Lunsford who put out the fire. The game was then called on account of darkness, while the scoreboard read 4‑4.

Beat Niles West

Maine West' s Warriors opened their defense of the State baseball championship last Thursday with a 5-1 victory against Niles West, after having their first three games rained out. The diamondmen then whipped Oak Park 4-3 by pushing across four runs on two hits.

Stoney Jackson got the win in the Oak Park game in relief of Jim Smith. Jackson struck out three in four innings, and allowed two hits. Although he walked three, his control was good considering the 20‑mile‑perhour wind. Smith showed signs of being a bit wild as he walked six. The big question mark in the Warrior camp this year has been pitching. Under fire the staff has shown up well so far. It appears that it will be up to the hitters to carry their share of the load.
Oak Park scored in the first inning on a single by Battaglia after Williams walked and moved to third. Maine tied the score in the second when John Gabbert scored on Chuck Esposito's single.

Huskies Advance

The Huskies surged into the lead again as Mueller, aboard on a walk, stole second, took third on a passed ball, and came home on the same play when Gabbert's throw went astray. Maine moved ahead to stay when they capitalized on a walk and two errors to score three runs and take a 4-2 lead.

In the top of the seventh, the last chance for Oak Park, they scored one run and only a fine throw from deep right field by Gerry Hanselmann to Gabbert at the plate kept them from tying the score.

One week ago the Warriors scalped the Indians from Niles. In that game, Les Jannusch and Dick Lunsford turned in fine performances, holding Niles to only one run on six hits. Once again, as in the Oak Park game, the Warriors were out hit, six to five.

Maine plays a game with Morton West on Saturday, the 18th and Evanston on Monday the 20th. Willowbrook will be next on Tuesday the 21st.
