Three West Scientist Will Enter
Statewide Competition
"Winning first place awards at the District Science Fair, three Maine West students will go to Urbana and compete in the State Science Finals," disclosed Mr. Joseph Clouser, science seminar director.
The District Fair, which took place at Lake Forest College, April 11th, qualified Jennifer Demko '67, Bob Larson '64, and Dick Hermann '65, to represent MW at the Illinois Junior Academy of Science Fair on the University of Illinois campus next May 7th, 8th, and 9th.
The projects, "Environmental Effects in Teratology" by Jenny, "Flowing Clock Reactions" by Dick, and "The Volumetric Determination of the Iso‑Electric Point of a Protein" by Bob were among 100 1st award winners of over 600 projects entered.
"These investigations," explained Mr. Clouser, "are the result of months of effort. We are very pleased with the showing they made at the district level, and we are confident that they will do as well in state competition."
Other MW winners at the District Fair were "The Effects of Ultraviolet Light on Bacteria" by Dan Barry '65, 2nd award; "The Determination of the Formation Constant of a Complex Ion" by Jim Benson '65, 2nd award; "Certain Environmental Effects on Pea and Bean Plants" by Don Clark '67, 3rd award; "The Effects of Dimerization on the Soluability of Acetic Acid" by Dick Leyerle '65, 2nd award, and "Formation of Ag20 from AgCl in a Molten Salt" by Ed Salm '65, 2nd award.
