John Composes;
Barb Gives Nicknames
"I own Maine West," humbly remarked the editor‑in‑chief of The Westerner, John Gauger '64. Wearing his ivy‑league button‑collar shirt, John beams a smile to everyone he passes in the halls.

Besides winning the DAR Award in history, John represented Maine West at Boys' State in his junior year and has also appeared on the television program Rebuttal. This well‑traveled senior journeyed to Urbana to attend the Journalistic Convention for The Westerner and went to Washington, D. C., for Mainites in Motion.

When a spare moment prevails, John enjoys bridge. He also has a great talent for singing and writing folk music. Well‑known for his sometimes rebellious remarks, the following lyrics are a sample of his ability to comment in a poignant, yet witty manner on controversial matters.

In Washingtown there's White and Brown.
The White men keep the Brown men down,
So that they never can made a sound;
That's how it is in Washingtown.

Showing his versatility, 'Gronk', as he is called by his friends, plays the mandolin, harmonica, jew's‑harp, guitar, cello, and other unusual instruments.

The most unusual moment that he could recall is when his father "walked into a ladies' washroom by mistake and I gallantly stood outside, stopping everyone from entering until my dad got out."

One may recall "baa, baa, black sheep," a now renowned phrase which John made famous as Dan Barry's campaign manager at the election assemblies.

Following high school, John intends to further his education at Wheaton College and to major in political science. Later on he plans to go into the ministry.
SNIFF ‑ - - SNIFF. Do you smell White Shoulders cologne?

Is there a trace of Wind Song in the air? Here comes the cologne addict of the year, Barb Sigalove '64.

"The most memorable events of my senior year include meeting the Brothers Four, being invited to a college Homecoming weekend, and collecting beatnik friends at the University of Chicago with Sharon 'Peaches' Geach '64," claims the co‑managing editor of The Westerner.

Barb is presently a hall monitor, a library assistant, and a member of Sigma Chi Sigma, Tri‑S, Quill and Scroll Society, and the A‑Honor Roll.

In the past years Barb's activities have included being a class council representative, Memory Record publicity chairman, junior baton twirler, Tri‑S president, and a member of Girls' Chorus, and Spanish Club.

Barb, whose most prized possessions are her hi‑fi and her record album collection, admits to an irresistible desire to give people nicknames such as 'Pizza Nose Riser.' Watching movies, dancing, collecting quotes, and singing "Songs for Sinners" with 'Geacharoonie' are favorite pastimes for Barb when she's not working on her history term paper or hoping to be as thin as Audrey Hepburn.

Sig' enjoys working on The Westerner and loves to describe the trip to the University of Illinois, which was taken by several staff members last fall. "It was really wild when John Gauger '64, insisted on eating hamburgers in a Chinese restaurant, and when Marty Muncy '64, locked me out of the motel room at night. You see, all the other rooms were being occupied by a fraternity whose house was being remodeled," she revealed.

Barb, who would like to be a journalist, will enter Monmouth College in the fall. She plans to continue studying her favorite subjects, Spanish and social science. "In college, I hope to retain my individuality, become a more useful person in society, and meet new friends like the wonderful kids I'm leaving behind at Maine (cha cha cha)."
