Trackmen Exterminate Prospect, 71‑47;
Grab Fifth Place in Waukegan Relays
The trackmen won their third Conference meet by smashing Glenbrook North on Tuesday, April 28th, by a 81-40 score. The ovalmen captured all but three first places out of a possible 15.
West's varsity tracksters swamped Prospect by a 71-47 score on Wednesday, April 22nd on the West oval. The Knights were considered the toughest Conference competition for the tracksters. Then Maine took a 5th in the tough Waukegan Relays. The next meet is tonight when the thinclads enter the Maine East Relays.
The ovalmen started out well, shutting out Prospect in the broad jump as Jerry Nebel, Paul Newman, and Jim Burson placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively. Bob Tatge proved the biggest blow to the Knights as he trounced their ace hurdler, Larry Bogart, in both the high and low hurdles. Bruce Congalton placed 3rd in the high hurdles and Wayne Wysoglad finished 3rd in the lows.
Rich Bokor placed 3rd in the 100‑yard dash for Maine, while Lloyd Schiegel set a new field record in the 880‑yard run, taking 1st place. Bernie Braun anchored the 880‑yard relay team of Dick Kobylski, Nebel, and Newman to victory. Bokor came back to finish 2nd in the 440‑yard dash.
In the mile run, John Greco raced to a new record and 1st place as Russ Suszko finished 3rd. Braun and Kobylski placed 1st and 2nd in the 220‑yard dash. Dale Luzinski, Bill Rosenbergh, and Tom Smith shut out Prospect in the shot put, and Smith and Luzinski placed 1st and 2nd in the discus. Neuman finished in 1st place in the high jump to round out the scoring.
A new trophy was added to the trophy case as Congalton, Tatge, Wysoglad, and Earl White set a new meet record in the high hurdle shuttle relay at the Waukegan Relays held last Saturday, April 25th. The Warriors placed 5th in the meet which Evanston won with 92 points compared to the tracksters' 36.
