"Maine West has built a strong athletic power, and I hope in years to come this tradition continues," proudly related Cliff Vogel, this week's Warrior of the West.
Besides excelling athletically, Cliff has proved himself academically as well. By keeping his standard B average, Cliff has become a member of the National Honor Society. Sports have taught him the value of team work and also have instilled in him a great pride in his school.
This blue‑eyed blond athlete stands 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighs 160 pounds, and is a firm believer in the theory that constant practice builds athletic power.
"Spectators in the stands who criticize the coaches and players," is his main pet peeve. He also feels that school spirit could be improved by not scheduling too many activities on the same night.
Cliff was chosen captain of this year's basketball team and is the only letterman on the tennis team, except for Bob Poyer. Cliff remarked that, at present, the team is doing very well.
"My proudest moment at Maine came when Bob Poyer and I were Conference champs in the doubles division during our sophomore year," reminisced Cliff.
During Cliff's school years at Maine his spare moments are spent participating in sports like varsity basketball in the winter, while softball, golf, and tennis occupy the rest of the year. Off the field and the court he enjoys eating pizza.
Following graduation, Cliff plans to attend Southern Illinois University majoring in biology and mathematics and possibly minoring in physical education.
