Ruth on Aquiana; Rog Plays Drums
I am a midget, and I love being one until some tall senior like Ruthie Sommers almost steps on me. When that happens I usually look up and yell, "Say Ruthie, what's new besides Ho Ho Ho!" Then this sweet, kind, lovable giant picks me up in her palm, and we chat awhile.
The last time this happened, I asked Ruthie a few questions. She told me all about school and her opinions of Maine West. "Taking those books from the library was not a very good idea, but it was the most organized thing I've ever seen in this school," she commented. "I remember that incident because they took away my hiding place on the bookshelf."
Ruth also said she thinks there should be a definite dress code allowing culottes and pert skirts if they're long enough. Maybe she can wear them when she attends University of Illinois next year. At Illinois, Ruthie plans to major in home economics and would like to become an interior decorator or designer.
Besides Tom Gast, Ruthie's hobbies and interests include Student Council, being Public Relations chairman, Aquiana, Senior Leaders, Spanish Club, and going to her Lake Geneva cottage whenever possible.
The two things that Ruthie likes best about Maine West are "its Alma Mater" and "its beautifully constructed fieldhouse."
She doesn't like the students' attitudes toward school activities but does like her senior year because the Senior Prom and graduation are really something to look forward to.
Ruth believes she was helped most in Senior Leaders by learning to get along with others and learning to teach classes.
In her category of pet peeves, Ruthie lists teachers who give too much week‑end homework as her first and getting something in her contacts as a close second.
Ruth has one older brother, two poodles, one bird, and fish. Because of the last three, she refers to her house as a pet shop.
While traveling around Maine West the other day, looking at all the hurrying people, whom should we come upon but Roger Pease, one of the busiest people we've seen in a long time.
This dark‑eyed, curly‑haired senior is quite active in both Show Band and in the school combo, "The Noteables."
"With rehearsals for Variety Show, Kiss Me, Kate, Band concerts, and the percussion ensemble, I'm kept pretty busy," remarked Rog. "There just isn't much time for any other outside activities!"
This is quite understandable, for Rog practices hard and ranks high in his class. Just recently out of 43 competing bands, he was chosen as the best drummer at the Chicagoland Stage Band Festival.
His experience at the festival rates the title of Rog's happiest moment. On the other hand, his date after last year's Variety Show ranks as most embarrassing. It seems that after the final Saturday night performance, Rog had a date on which, for some unknown reason, he fell asleep. Drummers who play too loudly are considered by Rog to be in very bad taste.
After graduation from Maine West, Rog plans to attend MacMurray College where he will major in liberal arts.
