Girl Takes Over in Auto Shop
"I wanted to learn about cars," replied brown‑eyed, red‑haired Joy Rasmussen '64, in answer to that familiar question, why do you want to take auto shop?
"It's just like asking someone why she took English," she added. After talking to Mrs. Mildred Cress, junior‑senior counselor, Joy had to talk to the head of the department, Mr. Robert Cochrane, and as usual, the same question arose. After bringing a note from home, she talked to Mr. Robert Wells, assistant principal, and later, she talked to Mr. Herman Rider, principal. On the first day she attended class, Joy became the center of interest by tripping while entering the shop.
"It took a while to get used to those coveralls, but I did it," she said. "I admit it was a lot harder than I expected, but I got quite a bit of help."
When asked about some of the projects during the year she replied, "Once we had to tear down an engine, clean all the parts, and rebuild it again."
Born in Chicago, Joy has lived in Detroit, Pittsburg, and St. Louis. Collecting records is her favorite pastime in addition to fixing cars.
After graduating, Joy will be co‑managing a cosmetics department store and may attend Northern Illinois University, after working a year.
