Top Seniors in Scholastics
Two events remain on the Seniors' fast fading last days at Maine West High School. These are the breakfast in the cafeteria, Thursday at 11 am. and graduation, Friday at 8 p.m. in the Maine East fieldhouse.
Heading the class in scholastic achievement are Arline Boyer, valedictorian and Jane Pressl, salutatorian. Jane will present her talk on "Creativity" and Arline chose "Superficiality or Depth? for her subject.
The next highest ranking in their respective order are Kenneth Miller, Nancy Wille, Marjorie Beck, Craig Ehlen, Robert Browne, Jacquelyn Piraino, Karen Rivard, Jeff Clement, Daniel O'Connell, and Donna Wolf.
Opening the Commencement exercises will be a fanfare composed by Mr. Jared Spears of the Music Department. Mr. Craig Massey, Des Plaines Bible Church, will give the invocation. Introducing the valedictorian and salutatorian will be Cal Lewis, class president, who will be introduced by Mr. Herman Rider, principal.
Mr. William Newport, school board president, will present the diplomas with the assistance of members Mr. Walter Craigle, Dr. John Russell, and Mr. John Wilkins. Graduates' names will be announced by Mr. Garth Boyer and Mr. George Walker, members of the English department.
The processional, "Coronation March" and "Grand March" from "Aida"; and the recessional "Pomp and Circumstance" and "Pomp and Chivalry" will be played by the Concert Band conducted by Mr. Robert Kuite, chairman of the Music Department.
Departments Make Awards
Seventeen deserving members of the class of 1964 were given departmental awards this morning as the class gathered for its traditional Honors Assembly in the auditorium.
For Art, Donna Lindboe and Todd Riddell were the recipients. Sandra Pluemer and Lynda West were named tops by Business Education. In English it was William Davis Hall.
Home Economics selected Linda Hendrix. Paul Fillman and William Ziehn were named outstanding by Industrial Education. Barbara Solka was the selectee from Language. Mathematics picked Tom Balma and Jeff Clement.
In Music Wayne Markworth was honored. High in Physical Education were Tom Gates from Boys' and Carol Challberg from the Girls'.
Robert Browne received the award in science. Social Science gave honors to Mary Gembicki and Jacquelyn Piraino.
Good Will Awards
Also revealed for the first time at the assembly were Dave Aegerter, Diane Clarke, Barry Eisfeldt, Chuck Esposito, Davis Hall, Peggy Johnson, Neshan Keshian, Cal Lewis, Donna Meier, Martha Muncy, Anita Steinart, and Donna Wolf as nominees for Good Will Awards.
Ursula Krome, foreign exchange student, was presented an honorary Good Will Award by Mr. A. K. H. Cochrane, dean.
Scholarships Announced
Mothers' Club scholarships were given to Jacquelyn Piraino and Tim Zijewski by Mrs. LeRoy Peterson, club president, and Mrs. O. T. Gastons, chairman of the committee.
Tri‑S presented its scholarship to Tim Zijewski by Lynn Olson, president. The GAA scholarship was given to Jean Mead by Miss Barbara Bovenmeyer, Girls’ P.E. Department.
Two new scholarships this year both went to Robert Steinbrink. They were given by the Student Council from the Path and by the Maine West Kiwanis Key Club.
Athletes Recognized
GAA honored Pam Pagel as outstanding athlete of the year, while the M‑Club award for "athlete of the year" went to Dave Aegerter.
John Bleharski was recognized with the Harvard Book Award presented by Dr. Richard Burnstine, Harvard alumnus.
Diane Dormeyer '65, student assembly chairman, acted as mistress of ceremonies introducing staff, students, and guests.
