VOL. V, NO. 2
Time To Begin College Hunt
Colleges, colleges, colleges! How do I register? What tests do I have to take? When are the tests given? Are you going to college? If so, do you know the answers to these questions? You had better, for if you don't, you probably won't get into the college of your choice.
One of the questions you will have to know the answers to is "Does your college require the CEEB tests?" If so, you will have to sign up to take them on December 7. The scores of the CEEB tests are critical in the complex mechanism of getting into a good school. If you don't do well the first time, most colleges will allow you to make up the test several times, and will then consider your best scores. Don't make the mistake, however, of waiting until May to take these tests. You may not get a chance to take them again.
Do you have a college in mind? This is most important. Before applying, you should have one specific college in mind. Some seniors seem to think that if you don't apply to at least five colleges, you aren't "in". This practice not only jams the college log books, but also isn't good for the particular student. He may not intend to consider half the colleges he has applied to.
Have you thought about the early decision plan? The early decision plan is the plan by which a student applies to one college only at the end of his junior year. If such a student is selected, he is notified in December or early January and formally agrees not to apply anywhere else. The college in turn commits itself by taking him provided his grades are good in his senior year. It is still not too late for a senior to file an early decision application now. Then, if you weren't accepted, you could pick another school before June.
