Warriors Face Unbeaten
Glenbrook Tonight
After a significant 52-0 victory over Proviso West, Glenbrook North, Maine's opponents tonight, remain undefeated and untied this year. Losing on Homecoming to Maine last year, the Spartans have plenty of reason for going all out to beat the Warriors. Led by John Twist, all-conference fullback, the Spartans boast a heavy line and slick ball handling. The Warriors will have their hands full, but should be up to the task.
In their home opener, the Warriors of Maine West downed the Warriors of Niles West, 13-6, in a hard-fought contest.
After a scoreless first half, Niles West took the lead on a 30-yard pass play. The kick was perfect and the score stood, 6-0. But our Warriors came roaring back with a score in each of the two remaining quarters. Stoney Jackson latched on to a Cal Lewis pass to tie the score. Maine took the lead on a two yard plunge by Cichowski and Gabbert's kick was good.
Rout Leyden
Rebounding from the 7-6 upset at Peoria, the varsity gridmen walked all over West Leyden. With tallys in each half, and outstanding defense which allowed the Knights in Warrior territory only twice the whole game, the men from Maine displayed everything which was missing a week earlier.
The Warriors first score came early in the first quarter. After kicking off, the Warriors defense held, and Leyden was forced to punt. Cal Lewis took the kick on his own 45, and scampered down the sideline for a 55-yard score. The extra point was off. The next tally was on a four yard plunge by Jim Cichowski and the kick by John Gabbert made the score, 13-0. Charlie Curren scored next on a 25-yard off-tackle play. The extra point was good and the score read, 20-0.
The Knights kicking off to start the second half, found Curren running the kick all the way for the second of his three touchdowns. The extra point was perfect and the score stood 27-0. Lewis and Curren each scored once more. Gabbert made the kicks. As the gun sounded the score stood Maine West 41, West Leyden 0.
