West's varsity cross country team swamped Niles West, 19-44, Thursday, September 26, in a home meet. Looking for new conquests, the Warriors will battle Prospect on October loth in an away meet.
Junior John Greco led the harriers to an easy victory. John turned in an excellent time of 10:35, which tied the course record set by Dave Bartel of Wheaton in 1961. Don Kinder, also a junior, lowered his best time by several seconds, running a fine 10:59. This is the first time that two Warriors have gone under the 11 minute barrier in the same meet.
The first 10 finishers for the Westmen were Greco, 1st; Kinder, 3rd; Tom Johnstone, 4th, 11:02; Lloyd Schiegel, 5th, 11:08; Bob Biggs, 6th, 11:13; Bob Gundelach, 7th, 11:14; Russ Suszko, 8th, 11:15; Rich Bokor, 9th, 11:19; Wayne Bushkin, 10th, 11:20; and Jim Armbruster, 11th, 11:23.
Participate In Center Meet
Saturday, September 28, the harriers participated in a Center meet at Morton West. A Center meet has five divisions - freshmen, sophomores, junior varsity, B‑varsity, and A‑varsity. The Warriors claimed 21 of the 50 medals offered and defeated York of Elmhurst, last year's state champs.
Rich Kehrer, 6th, and Rich Bokor, 9th, received medals on the junior varsity level. Harriers won the B‑varsity went wild, taking 7 out of 10 possible medals. These were Wayne Bushkin, 1st; Bob Larson, 3rd; Les Schalla, 4th; Al Tyler, 6th; Chip Goebrecht, 7th; Chip Krainik, 8th; and Frank Tantone, 10th. On the A‑varsity level, runners claiming medals were Greco, 2nd; Kinder, 4th; Johnstone, 7th; Gundelach, 8th; Schlegel, 9th; and Biggs, 10th.
