VOL. V, NO. 2
"Being on the state champion baseball team just has to be my most exciting experience," related John Gabbert, this week's Warrior in the spotlight.
Some of the honors bestowed upon this sports personality are election to captain of the football team and co‑captain of the basketball squad during his sophomore year. He also played on the 1962 Interim League championship varsity baseball team.
John plays linebacker on the defensive team and does all of the extra point kicking for the gridders. When asked about this year's football team, he offered, "I think we can win the conference championship if everyone will put out to the best of his ability."
Last season, John was selected all-Interim catcher and was second in the polling for all-tournament catcher at the state championship play-offs in Peoria. In football, his extra points helped defeat Deerfield, 21-19, and Niles West, 20-19. John is also a valuable asset to the basketball team as he played pincher on Coach Freeman's squad.
Along with all of these activities, John is secretary of the M‑Club. His interests are eating steak and entertaining a certain senior girl on the Pom‑Pom squad. After completing high school, John plans to attend either Purdue or the University of Illinois.
