Beware! Halloween Is Here
Spooks, goblins, and vampires. Halloween is here again. That magical day of Oct. 31, "day of the dead," has come. Is there anything more frightening than to take a walk on that weird night?
A cool breeze, a full moon, half‑covered by dark clouds, and a small bat add the final touch. As you walk down the street, does your mind play tricks? Do you hear footsteps falling behind you? Or do you hear soft voices in the breeze?
A black cat jumps across your path! You're heart jumps to your throat! Then you laugh at your own fear. But it is only a half‑hearted laugh because you know that you were really afraid of a "silly" old superstition.
Halloween is only a silly superstition, with nothing more to it than pumpkins, apple cider, scarecrows, and cornstalks, Or perhaps
You realize, of course, that in Europe years ago, all doors were locked and prayers were said all night. Ha, ha? Halloween was seldom celebrated in the U.S. until the Irish came in the early 1800's. They brought the custom and we took it from there! Asking for people to pay for protection from getting their pumpkins smashed or their windows waxed was one of our many "additions" to Halloween, American‑style.
