New Teachers Enjoy
Traveling, String Bass
Playing in the Arlington Civic Symphony Orchestra is one of the accomplishments of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Cooper. Mr. Cooper is one of the new English teachers at West this year. He plays the string bass and his wife plays the clarinet.

Mr. Cooper was born in Iowa City and attended the University of Iowa where he received his MA. degree. "I decided to teach English during my senior year of high school," revealed Mr. Copper. "My English teacher had a great influence on my decision."

Intramurals and instrumental music were his favorite activities in college.

When asked about a most embarrassing moment, Mr. Cooper reflected, "One I remember happened during a football game when my pants ripped. We sure called a quick huddle that time!"

As for pet peeves he said "Students who are dishonest and cheaters rate very low with me." He also said he preferred a loafer over a liar.

Mr. Cooper likes teaching at Maine. His only problem he thinks is remembering so many names. At South Junior High where he previously taught, he knew all 700 students by name.
"All Irish" heads the description of Miss Patricia J. Conway, who stands 5 feet 6 inches tall with brown hair and green eyes. She teaches freshmen English, speech, and she assists in debate.

"The most worthwhile investment I ever made," reflected Miss Conway, "was when I went to Europe traveling with a group of students." She spends her spare time correcting papers, not to mention trying to attend some plays, skiing, enjoying all other sports, and reading.

Miss Conway's first impression of Maine West was that of a: friendly atmosphere with a lack of super sophisticates. Since Miss Conway is interested in debate events, she hopes that individuals will participate.

She was born in Wisconsin, did her graduate work there and is now studying for her Master's. Her undergraduate work was done at Northwestern.
