Football, gymnastics, and tennis are the favorite sports of Mr. Roger King, graduate of Illinois State Normal University. Mr. King is entering his first year as a coach at Maine West.
After graduating from high school, Mr. King enlisted in the Marine Corps for two years. He firmly believes that everyone who goes to college should have a purpose and a goal.
At Illinois State College in Normal, Mr. King spent two years on the football team and four years on the tennis team. His most memorable experience at college included being on the tennis team which was conference champs three out of four years. Coach King believes that his most enjoyable year was his senior year.
When asked what his pet peeve was, he firmly responded, "The individual who doesn't put forth his maximum effort."

This year's freshman football team has a new and experienced coach. His name is Coach Gartner and he is an alumnus of Maine East.
Coach Gartner graduated from Maine East with the class of '54, and worked two years before entering Iowa State University on a football scholarship. He taught for two years at Carl Sandburg High School in Peoria, before coming to Maine West.
"I played football under Coach Olson and Coach Nyren at Maine East, and that's why I finally decided to come here," said Mr. Gartner. Not only was he a Varsity end on Maine's football team, but he also lettered in basketball and baseball.
As a final comment, Coach Gartner reminded, "The only way for the average student to improve his gym grade, is to work hard. The hardest working student gets the highest grade. I don't mark boys on their ability; it's their effort that counts."
