VOL. V, NO. 3
October 18, 1963
HISTORY WAS made at Maine West this year with the organization of the first GAA intramural track teams. Enthusiastic girls were able to test their physical capabilities at the meet held on October 9th and 10th. Ruth Christian '67, took first place in the softball throw; Mary Franzen '67, in the running broad jump; Ursula Krome '64, in the high jump; Deloras Webster '67, 50‑yard dash; Nancy Gunn '67, 100‑yard dash; and Diane Bauman, Ruth Christian Darlene Daszek, and Tern Sassman, all '67, took the 440‑yard relay. "GAA and the intramural programs are under a full head of steam and progressing well," reported Miss Pierce. Sports now in progress are archery and tennis on Tuesdays and Thursdays, hockey on Mondays and Wednesdays, and modern dance on Mondays. Starting November 4th, GAA will offer badminton and volleyball. Girls do not have to be a member to participate.
SO FAR THIS season the varsity football Steam has racked up 114 points to 27 for their opponents.
JV GRIDDERS' HOPES of going undefeated for three consecutive seasons were shattered October 4th when they fell to GB North, 25-0. Bad luck plagued them again last Saturday when Prospect crushed them 32-0. Their record now stands at 3-2. The JV's will take on GB South tonight in an effort to get back into the victory column.
THE FROSH‑SOPH harriers won their meet Thursday with GB South, 24-37. Phil Martin took first place with 8:19. Frosh Ed Lusk placed second with a new freshman course record of 8:24. The old record was 8:39 set by John Abbott in 1961.
THE FROSH GRIDDERS rolled up two more conference victories, 13-6 over GB North, and 13-0 over Prospect. Against GB, TD'S were made by Fulbright and Mandelky, with Pump making the extra point. Pump and Romness made the TD's at Prospect.
THE SOPHOMORE FOOTBALL team broke even in its last two ball games, defeating GB North 13-6, but losing to Prospect, 7-6, on October 5th and 12th, respectively. In the GB game, the sophs spotted the Spartans a 6-point lead but rallied behind two touchdown runs by tailback Steve Ryden. Jim Kautz ran over for one extra point, but the second try failed. In the Prospect came, the sophs jumped off to an early lead on a 6-yard touchdown run. The extra point failed. With 20 seconds left in the first half, a Warrior punt was blocked and the ball was picked up by a Prospect lineman, who ran 20 yards into the end zone. The extra point was good, and the Knights led 7-6. Late in the third quarter a touchdown scored by Steve Ryden was called back because of an offsides penalty. The sophs next game is against GB South, Saturday, at 9:30 am on the GB field.
