Maine West Clubs Reveal
Future Plans and Activities
Do you enjoy fashion shows, cooking, sewing, or just plain fun? If so, now is the time to join the Home Economics Club, which is under the direction of Mrs. Ruth Volz, new instructor in the foods department.
Election of officers took place in October with Janet Stern '65, president, and Linda Schumacher '65, vice‑president being placed in office.
The club is looking forward to many interesting activities. A hair stylist will demonstrate the techniques of hair styling in November. Christmas decorations will be assembled in December by the club president. A tour of the United Air Lines Stewardess Base will be taken in January. In February a representative from Patricia Steven's school will talk on poise, grace, and beauty. Items will be made in March for orphanages. A "Spring Tea" is the closing event of the year scheduled for April.
Anyone and everyone can join the Home Economics Club. Meetings are on the third week of every month.
Math Club
"We have a real club going," remarked Mr. David Paisley, one of three sponsors of the Math Club.
Math Club meets once a month on whatever Thursday is available. In meeting, club members do recreational math such as board games. Last year chess, checkers, hex, and gale were used. A game called mil, originated in Norway, has been introduced this year.
Sponsoring the math problem of the week is another club activity. Some type of field trip is planned for this year.
The club consists of about 30 members. Refreshments are served at every meeting. Mr. Dean Gould and Miss Diane Schlieckert are the other two sponsors.
In departing, Mr. Paisley said, "Anyone who is interested is welcome to join us. Girls are welcome, too, because math is not just a boys' subject."
GAA
Rising young stars will highlight the 1963 GAA Mother-Daughter Playnight. "Playnight" promises to be a riotous time for GAA members and their mothers who are invited on November 9, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. to participate in the activities in the gyms and pool.
Displaying their talents will be Melody Clark '65, Barbara Colberg '65, Cheryl Hagedorn '65, Pat Johnson '65, Sue Kalb '65, Barbara Kosac '65, Lynn Struebing '66, and Leora Winski '66. Several of the mothers will present an act and a Hootenanny will conclude the evening.
Cheryl Hagedorn '65, chairman of the event, announced that badminton, swimming, volleyball, trampoline, and ping-pong will be offered for fun and refreshments will be served.
Led by Jean Mead '64, the GAA tennis team completed its most successful season in a tie with Evanston High School for first place in the North Suburban Tennis League. In their first undefeated season, the team beat Niles East 3-1, Glenbrook 3-2, Niles West 4-1, and Barrington 5-0. In their final match against Evanston High School, last year's undisputed champions, the Maine West team, won all singles matches and one doubles to tie Evanston 4-4.
For the first time at Maine West a class field hockey tournament has been held. Every class team has played 3 matches and the winning team will play a women's faculty team on Monday, November 4 at 3:50 p.m.
The GAA archers competed against Glenbrook North on October 15. Those girls representing Maine West were Arlene Blaha '64, Jean Hettgar '67, Marilyn Jenks '65, Pam Pagel '64, and Leora Winski '66.
