Maine West Leads With New Course
Maine West is once again proving to be a leader in the field of education in Illinois. Along with two other schools in Illinois, West has introduced what is called Supervised Job Training into its curriculum.
This program consists of going to school for a half day and working the other half. Although this sounds like the work experience program, it is different in that a student must be selected by the counselors to participate. Also jobs along this line do not require as long an apprenticeship as jobs in the work experience program.
Problems such as transportation and scheduling have to be worked out. Because of transportation problems, most of the jobs are in Des Plaines or close by. Examples of jobs are automotive mechanics, stock clerk, blue print machine operator, hand type compositors, automotive salesman, and sales in general.
This is the first year of operation for the program, with 29 students participating. Mr. Ralph Sides, former industrial mathematics teacher, is the coordinator.
