West Salutes New Teachers
"The beautiful physical plan of Maine West was the first thing I noticed." emphasized Mr. Eldon Burk, new biology teacher.

With dark hair and glasses, Mr. Burk appears very serious about his work, but a conversation proves him to have a very warm personality.

Mr. Burk received his bachelor's degree at Eastern New Mexico University and his M.A. from the State College at Iowa. Previously he taught at Washington Junior High and Rio Grand High School in Albuquerque, before moving to Illinois.

It bothers Mr. Burk when students don't ask questions. Although he doesn't have many pet peeves, one of them is intolerance.

"If the climate continues like the present, I will be more than pleased with my move to Maine West," remarked Mr. Burk. "Even if the climate doesn't last, it's still a good feeling to be a part of Maine." In New Mexico Mr. Burk got used to a very dry, warm climate.

Music and all sports, golf especially, are hobbies of Mr. Burke's. If he ever gets the chance he would like to take a trip to Europe.
One of Maine West's new teachers is Mr. Robert J Freeman. This 5 foot 5 inch, green-eyed bachelor, graduated from Bradley University in 1963, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree.

His hobbies include photography and music. If any of you girls noticed that he is single you might be interested to know that he prefers brunettes over anything.

While in college he participated in band. When he was asked about what he thought of Maine West, he commented, "This is a big school, and anything that is done is done well."

Mr. Freeman's pet‑peeve is loafing. His most embarrassing experience happened this year when he went over to Maine East to get some records and he was mistaken for a student.
Pretty Miss Lois Guertin is Maine West's newest French teacher. One of the first things Miss Guertin noticed about Maine was how friendly the students are. "They always say hello," she explained. Miss Guertin likes students who are natural, friendly, sincere, and willing to learn

Latin was Miss Guertin's first interest. It was when she won a Fulbright scholarship and studied at the Universite de Portiers in France that she first became attracted to French. Miss Guertin spent a year and a summer in Europe, and while she was there she traveled from Scandinavia to Morrocco. One of the things she found most interesting was staying at Youth Hostels.

Before teaching at Maine West Miss Guertin was at Laurence Central High School in Indianapolis. She got her M.A. at Middlebury College French School and has also studied at the University of Colorado and the University of Oregon at Tours, France.
