Maine Battles Deerfield for Crown
The Mid-Suburban League crown goes on the line tomorrow when Maine plays Deerfield at East's Stadium. Both teams have 3-0 conference records and boast the best personnel.

The Warriors racked up their second highest score of the season last Friday, by swamping the Forest View Falcons, 40‑6.

Intercept Pass

After kicking off, linebackers Volker Engel and John Gabbert combined to pick off a Falcon pass, thrown from one of the weirdest formations ever seen on the prep gridiron. The formation sent the center, end, and quarterback to the left side of the field and the rest of the team to the right. Soon after the interception, Charlie Curren scored on a 21‑yard run. Jim Cichowski scored next on a 2‑yard plunge. Then it was Cichowski once more, going 4 yards for the tally. Gabbert was two for three in the extra point department and at the half, Maine led 20‑0.

Chuck Esposito surprised the Falcons by running the second half kick-off 70-yards for Maine's fourth score. The Falcons only score came when they ran a partially blocked punt, 55-yards to make the score, 27-6. Maine scored twice more in the game. Once on an 8-yard run by Cichowski and again on a 12-yard scamper by Bruce Congalton. The final point try by Tom Smith was blocked.
Win Homecoming Game

Against Decatur‑Eisenhower, Maine looked impressive by racking up 27 points against a slightly smaller, but very fast Panther team.

After a scoreless first quarter, Curren put the Warriors in the lead with a 27‑yard run. Gabbert's extra point was good. Chuck Esposito took a Cal Lewis pass, and was dropped just 2‑yards from the goal, enabling Curren to score his second TD of the night. The kick was missed and the half ended in Maine's favor, 13‑0.

Maine lost a chance for its second shut-out of the year, when the Panthers scored on a 45-yard pass play, but came up with two more scores. The first was a 40-yard pass from Cal Lewis to Dennis Gundling, and the fourth and final tally was on a 4-yard run by Lewis. Both kicks were good.
