19 Get Merit Award Letters
In Assembly
For the first time at Maine West an honors assembly was given during mid‑year to recognize outstanding scholarships which took place Wednesday, the first period.

Nineteen seniors received a formal letter of commendation signed by Principal H. L. Rider and the president of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Mr. Rider presided at the assembly and Mr. Dan Holbrook, chairman of the committee for the promotion and recognition of scholarship spoke on the merits of good scholarship.

Also recognized were the top 15 per cent of the students in the Sophomore and Junior Classes, and all freshmen who are taking any class labeled accelerated.

Letters of commendation for their high performances on the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test were given to Janis Bocskay, John Borzoni, Arline Boyer, Robert Browne, John Clement, Loret Egelston, Craig Ehlen, Val Enggas, William Davis Hall, and Ernest Larsen.
Also to Robert Larson, Kenneth Miller, Daniel O'Connell, Jane Pressl, Karen Rivard, Brian Sosdian, Janet Virostko, Nancy Wille, and Richard Wills.

Other faculty members of the Scholarship Committee are Principal H. L. Rider, Assistant Principal Robert Wells, Chairman of Counselors Wayne Rosenquist, Chairman of Social Studies Otto Kohler, Chairman of Mathematics Norman Ladd, Chairman of English William Ludolph, and Chairman of Science Loren Miller.

Mr. Holbrook and his committee have no definite plans for future recognition days, but hope to have more assembly programs of the type held this week.
