VOL. V, NO. 5
Maine West Juniors Named
City Officials
Twenty‑three Maine West students were chosen to be city officials this week, as a part of Youth Appreciation Week. These students were selected by their U.S. history teachers to draw for various city official jobs on Saturday, November 9th. They were sworn in and began to officiate in their various departments.
Youth Appreciation Week is sponsored by the Optimist's Club and serves the purpose of giving young people the opportunity to participate in local government. Also, youth week provides an interesting insight into the inner workings of the local government rather than only the state and federal governments, which are taught in school.
The Maine West students who were chosen as city officials are Tom Guppy, Mayor; Ed Morman, Controller; Patricia Gass, City Attorney; Beth Holmgren, Zoning Board of Appeals; Richard Leyerle, Civil Service Commissioner;
Beverly Buthman, Police and Fire Commissioner; Rob Reinhart, Plan Commissioner; Bill Currer, Architectural Commissioner; Bruce Jacobsen, Library Commissioner; Annette Sobb, Director of Civil Defense; Diane Weldon, Building Inspector; Craig Vosburgh, President of the Safety Council; Jim Nuccio, Health Inspector; and Dawn Piotter, a Court Representative.
Fourteen aldermen are also among those chosen. They are Ursula Krome, Maine West's AFS student, and Kent Lashway from the First Ward, John Poleczny and David Humphreys from the Second Ward, Jim Robbins and Stu Kriegermeier from the Fourth Ward, Karl Raack from the Fifth Ward, Ann Eversten from the Sixth Ward, and Stuart Parker and John Martoccio from the Seventh Ward.
Included in the activities of youth week is a visit of the student officials to the Mayor of Chicago Wednesday, November 13th. No doubt the events during this youth week will never be forgotten by those who participated, and may lead to individual interest and future careers for those students
