Gridders Capture
The First Mid Suburban Title, 49-0
Maine West captured the first Mid-Suburban League title November 2nd, by trouncing Deerfield 49-0. Outstanding jobs by both the defensive and offensive lines, along with great backfield running, enabled the Warriors to end their season with an unblemished 4-0 conference record, and a 7-1 seasonal total.

Olson Deserves Credit

Many factors contributed to this victory. Firstly, Coach Kenny Olson had the entire squad up for the game and certainly deserves a lot of credit. All of the players were "fired up." The defense hit and rushed hard, causing many fumbles and interceptions. Offensive backs moved quickly and surely, taking advantage of excellent offensive blocking.
All‑Conference

In addition to having a spectacular season, the Warriors placed 11 out of a possible 23 candidates on the all‑conference team. They are backs Chuck Esposito, Charlie Curren, and John Gabbert, ends Ray Bartholomae, Les Jannusch, and Earl White, guards Dave Aegerter and Volker Engel, tackles Dale Luzinski and Bob Unroe, and center Dick Lunsford, Jim Cichowski. Cal Lewis received honorable mention.

Against Deerfied, Maine controlled the game from the opening kick‑off and, led by Charlie Curren, scored five times. Curren's touchdowns came on runs of 20, 81, 84, 2, and 40‑yards, respectively. Other Warrior scores came on a 25‑yard scamper by Cal Lewis, and a defensive score by Stoney Jackson. John Gabbert added all seven extra points, giving the Warriors a well earned victory.
