VOL. V, NO. 6
By John Gauger
Mainites in Motion is a fact.
You have, therefore, a quite natural choice to make of either supporting or rejecting the group. Indifference signifies rejection. To make this decision intelligently you must know what Mainites in Motion stands for, and at this point few people do know, including the author. All I know is that it is anti‑communist, which may be enough to know.
But whatever Mainites in Motion is, it speaks out. It gives the "silent generation" a mouthpiece, a mouthpiece that blurts out too loudly for some.
Have you ever noticed how we say some words that we don't really mean. We say idealistic for confused; underdeveloped for barbaric; and cautious for apathetic. We do this under a guise of politeness when in effect we are performing a disservice to all concerned.
In the wake of President Kennedy's death, the Republican party finds itself in troubled waters. They will have great difficulty in forming a platform that will not seem sacrilegious or disrespectful. If Johnson receives the Democratic nomination for President the Republicans will have little to throw against him, mainly because he doesn't have time to do anything wrong.
The nomination, which was once wormwood to Richard Nixon has once again caught his interest. Official John Gauger prediction for the Republican ticket is Nixon/Goldwater, on the condition that Goldwater will take second place. Democratically, a Johnson/Humphreys ticket is in order.
NAACP Writes
I received a letter from a NAACP member who objected to my story on folksingers. She said that I equated Negroes with illiterates, that Peter, Paul, and Mary were drooling slobs (although they buy their clothes at Brooks Brothers), and that I was more prejudiced than Governor Barsomebody.
I suppose all of these could be implied from the article, but I am not entirely without defense. I said ethnic Negroes were illiterate. The very term ethnic implies some sort of illiteracy, just as there are ethnic whites who would be illiterate. But again that is not all the term ethnic implies. I never mentioned Peter, Paul, and Mary by name. Also, I bless my liberal little soul, have nothing against Negroes.
