Girl Finds Pie‑Baking Rewarding
Marcia Surrikoff '65, is this year's winner of the Cherry Pie baking contest. Marcia is from the Foods II class, taught by Miss Norma Benner.
Judging the contest were Mrs. Judith Hardy, home economics teacher; Mr. Vernon Moeller, counselor; and Mr. Herman Rider, principal.
The contest was open to any girls interested in participating. It was sponsored by the Northern Illinois Gas Company.
The contest begins in the foods classes, then the winner and her teacher participate in a January 25th district bake-off at Northern Illinois Gas Company headquarters in Glenview. Participants in this contest are from the suburban area.
The two bake-off winners from this group receive trophies and a weekend trip to Chicago to visit various theaters and restaurants. These girls then join other divisional winners for the final bake-off in Aurora. The girl who is finally chosen the Penny Flame Pie Queen, is awarded a $600 scholarship to any school of her choice. The second place winner receives a $200 scholarship to her favorite school.
The students will not only be judged on their baking skills but also on their appearance and poise.
"One of the real benefits of this contest is the fact that it gives the girls an opportunity to demonstrate not only their skill, but also their poise and ability to perform before an audience," related Mrs. Lucille Stiles, chairman of the Home Economics Department.
